Abstract: Introduction: Aging is a natural, progressive, and irreversible process that affects individuals throughout their lives. As age advances, physiological and cognitive changes occur, often impacting functional capacity and the overall quality of life of older adults. A significant proportion of elderly individuals exhibit some level of cognitive decline, potentially progressing to conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Objective: To identify, in the recent scientific literature, the main challenges faced by nursing professionals in providing care for elderly patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Methods: This is a descriptive literature review based on publications from 2018 to 2025. An electronic search was conducted using the Virtual Health Library (VHL) database. A total of 8 full-text articles in Portuguese were selected for analysis. The keywords used were: elderly, nursing care, and Alzheimer’s disease. Results: The findings were categorized into three main thematic areas: (1) Technical and Scientific Competence of Nursing in the Care of Alzheimer’s Patients; (2) Professional Training and Continuing Education for Nurses; (3) Barriers and Challenges in the Implementation of Individualized Care Plans. Conclusion: Nursing plays a vital role in the care of elderly individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. However, limited knowledge about the disease’s progression and the specific needs of elderly patients poses significant challenges. Given that AD affects cognitive abilities and daily functioning, nursing care should be grounded in evidence-based strategies aimed at symptom management, slowing disease progression, and providing humanized, patient-centere care.
