Abstract: ABSTRACT: Brazil is the largest consumer of pesticides in the world in absolute numbers, and in recent years at least 493 more pesticide registrations have been approved. It is worth noting that there are several ways of pesticide poisoning, such as eating contaminated food. Therefore, the objective of this study is to describe the prevalence of poisoning through the ingestion of food contaminated by pesticides in the Northeast from 2000 to 2017. In this way, a descriptive study was carried out, based on the collection of data on available cases of pesticide poisoning. in the Sinitox database, finding and using in the database variables such as: (1) the circumstance of poisoning, (2) age and (3) sex of the population, crossing the data with (4) contamination by pesticides from agricultural and domestic use and (5) food intake. The number of reported cases of contamination by pesticides in the Northeast was 22,400 people, of which approximately 5,427 cases had food intake as the agent of contamination. The problem of pesticides must be addressed in a way that takes into account the impact on the health of the population in the long term, which is why more severe inspections and studies on the real cases of contamination by pesticides are necessary, so that measures can be proposed in the perspective of reducing the number of accidents caused by the use of pesticides.
