Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Nutritionists and Physical Education Professionals have among their attributions to guide clients regarding eating behavior and the adoption of life habits that promote health. Studies suggest that eating disorders, such as orthorexia nervosa, as well as alterations in body image perception, such as muscle dysmorphia, are common among these professionals. OBJECTIVES: to estimate the prevalence of orthorexia and muscle dysmorphia in university students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 311 volunteers divided into three groups, control (n=147) Nutrition (N) (n=79) and Physical Education (n=85). The Body Shape Questionnaire, Exercise Dependence Scale and ORTO-15 were used. Results were compared using analysis of variance and post-hoc tests, assuming p≤0.05 for statistical differences. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The scores obtained for body image indicate mild disturbance of self-image for the control (89.1±3.1) and Nutrition (80.6±3.9), the Physical Education group does not present alterations (71,5±3.7). The ORTO-15 showed values of (37.1±0.3) for control, (35.3±0.4) Nutrition and (36.7±0.5) Physical Education, indicating that the Nutrition group (35.3 ±0.4) presents a higher risk compared to the control group. As for muscle dysmorphia, the Physical Education group (54.1±1.8) showed a higher risk compared to the control group (43.9±1.6) and the Nutrition group (43.6±1.9). Through correlation analysis, a significant negative (r2=-0.253) correlation (p<0.001) was found between muscle dysmorphia and orthorexia. CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that there is a high prevalence of orthorexia nervosa among university students studied with a positive correlation with muscle dysmorphia. Further studies are recommended to understand the social impact of these disturbances.
