Abstract: The paper presents the electropolishing process that seeks to generate specific knowledge about the electrochemical polishing process in SAE 1020 steels, how the process variables and the brightness of the metal surfaces in this type of steel affect them. Electropolishing is a surface treatment by which the metal to be polished acts as an anode in an electrolytic cell, dissolving. In order to produce a truly smooth surface, with the application of current, a polarized film is formed on the metal surface under treatment, allowing the metal ions to diffuse through said film. In the present study, it is intended to subject a steel probe to this process simultaneously, and under controlled conditions of current intensity and temperature, to obtain a surface gloss. Therefore, achieve a flat, shiny electropolished surface, which will not have the appearance of mechanical polishing. Also obtain a mirror-like surface for later metallographic analysis. In terms of corrosion resistance, electropolished probes showed an improvement over mechanically polished ones.
