Abstract: ABSTRACT:Sodium alginate is one of the most widely used biopolymers for the manufacture of antimicrobial dressings. The "saião", identified as Kalanchoe crenata (Andrews) Haw, (Kc), is a succulent sold in the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro with healing and emollient properties. This study presents preliminary results obtained from the development of alginate films and the preparation of extract from Kc leaves with the aim of developing low- cost antimicrobial dressings. FTIR analysis showed the characteristic bands of alginates and the presence of flavonoids, component with anti-inflammatory properties, in the structure of the powder (p-Kc) and extract (E-Kc) of Kc. TGA analysis showed that the thermal behavior of these materials was compatible with that presented in the literature. Particle size analysis characterizes p-KC as moderately coarse, which facilitates the action of the solvent in preparing the extract. The calculated loss on desiccation of E-cK is in accordance with the recommendations of the pharmacopoeia (maximum 14%). The total yield of the extract was 2.4%, value commonly found for succulents. The thickness and mechanical properties of the cur ed films showed values in line with those required for a dressing.
