Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the scientific production regarding unconventional health practices used by cancer patients and to verify the levels of evidence of the selected publications. This is an integrative literature review, carried out in the LILACS, BDENF, and MEDLINE databases. The corpus consisted of 15 articles, selected according to previously established criteria. Data analysis was based on the similarity of ideas, allowing the organization of findings into three thematic categories: unconventional practices used; meanings and motivations attributed to their use; and effects resulting from these practices. Regarding the classification of levels of evidence, in the clinical question directed at treatment/intervention, two level 2 studies and one level 3 study were identified. In relation to investigations focused on meaning, four studies were classified as level 2 and one as level 4. In the clinical question referring to prognosis/etiology, seven studies were classified as level 4. It is concluded that there is a diversity of unconventional practices employed by cancer patients, with different purposes and meanings. There is a clear need for studies with higher levels of scientific evidence in order to support clinical practice and strengthen evidence-based nursing care.
