Abstract: Brazil stands out nationally and internationally for the production of food of plant and animal origin, whether in natura or industrially processed form. Therefore, large amounts of biomass are generated that end up becoming huge environmental liabilities with little or no use. However, in recent decades, numerous researches have been developed with the aim of adding value and use of this biomass for use in environmental remediation processes, disposal to the soil and the production of biofertilizer. However, swine manure has become an environmental concern due to the enormous potential for environmental pollution it can trigger in nature. In this context, numerous works have been carried out with the objective of reducing and adding value to swine manure, which presents an enormous potential for the production of biofertilizer, biogas and electric energy generation, resulting in cost reduction for the producer. However, the lack of assistance and technical guidance from the public authorities means that pig farmers do not have the necessary knowledge for a better management of their production, which could provide: i) improvements in all stages of the production chain; ii) reduction in the consumption of water and food for the entire flock; and iii) improper and irregular disposal of swine manure, as well as the wastewater used to clean pigsties. Therefore, this work aims to: i) present recent data on the production and consumption of pork in Brazil and in the world; ii) the socio-environmental implications arising from pig farming and iii) proposals that provide a more ecologically correct management that results in greater profitability for the pig farmer.
