Abstract: Brazil wastes enormous waterway potential by underutilizing the navigable rivers of its 12 hydrographic regions. Currently, of the 63,000 kilometers that could be used, practically two-thirds are not. Waterway transportation in the country commercially utilizes (for cargo and passengers) only 19,500 km (30.9%) of its network. The rivers with the greatest navigation potential (navigable) are located in the Amazon region and, because they are geographically far from large urban centers, are the least economically exploited. To this end, we aim to analyze the scenario and potential of waterways as essential infrastructure for the development of the Amazon Bioeconomy. This is a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study, using secondary bibliographic and documentary material with data and content analysis. Amazon waterways are essential elements for integrating the Bioeconomy into the regional economic dynamics. Furthermore, they meet the need to reconcile economic development with environmental protection, preserving regional habits and customs that predate the arrival of colonizers in the region.
