Abstract: Aquatic macrophytes are plants that can serve as indicators of eutrophication, that is, excessive pollution of water bodies. These plants have the potential to perform important functions, including bioindicators and remediators of aquatic environments. This study evaluated the bioremediation potential of the macrophyte Lemna sp. in association with Typha domingensis, exploring its effects as a biological remediator and filter, respectively, in contaminated effluents. To achieve this objective, a literature review was carried out followed by an experimental study using Lemna sp. in association with Typha domingensis. Water quality indicators were evaluated, including nutrient removal, total coliforms (MPN/100mL), Escherichia coli (MPN/100mL) and soluble phosphorus (mg/L). The results demonstrated a significant reduction in all analyzed parameters, corroborating data found in the literature. Thus, Lemna sp. associated with Typha domingensis proved to be a practical and effective approach for the remediation of water bodies. However, more studies are needed to establish standard methodologies and evaluate effectiveness in different types of water resources.
