Abstract: Environmental management has become a topic of great relevance for both companies and public authorities, with growing awareness of the need to adopt effective measures to promote a balanced environment and guarantee a better quality of life for future generations. The general objective of this work was to discuss the importance of PNRS in promoting sustainable development, highlighting its contributions to the creation of municipal policies. The methodology used was the narrative literature review. Article 225 of the Federal Constitution establishes the right to an ecologically balanced environment and imposes this responsibility on both society and the Public Power. This principle is reinforced by the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS), which implements shared responsibility among all actors involved in the management of urban solid waste. The adoption of government measures to promote environmental sustainability, although late, is essential to reduce damage to the environment. The discussion on how the PNRS can contribute to local policies and the examples indicated in this work suggest that municipal policies must focus on their specific demands, meeting both the macro objectives, defined by the PNRS, and those related to the local reality , being, in view of this observation, more appropriate to the needs presented.
