Abstract: This article, which summarizes and updates the author's master's dissertation, deals with the process of urban expansion in São Carlos, in the interior of São Paulo, during the period from 1930 to 1960. Always associating the urban territorial development of the city with the economic processes and political transformations that arose after the 1930 Revolution, an event that marked the decline of the coffee economy and its political representatives, the text seeks to demonstrate that the political rise of liberal professionals and local commercial and industrial activities favored, in the period following the end of World War II, real estate initiatives related to the urban way of life and industrial work. The government's incentive to the urban land market during the 1940s and 1950s produced significantly negative impacts on the landscape and social life of São Carlos, reversing the municipal policy of favoring the territorial expansion of the city from the second half of the 1950s.
