Abstract: The use of ornamental plants plays a significant role in the landscape decoration of places, home gardens, and plots, in addition to other benefits such as soil conservation and contributing to the diversity of species in a given location. Regardless of whether they are trees, shrubs, smaller plants, herbaceous, or herbs. The study aimed to sample, identify, and analyze the richness, abundance, similarity, and diversity indices of ornamental plants in public roads and open areas in three different municipalities in the state of Maranhão. The research was conducted in a central neighborhood of each city: Chapadinha, Anapurus, and São José de Ribamar. A total of 483 individuals of 47 different species were sampled. In public area AP1 (Chapadinha), 189 individuals and thirty-three species, plus four indeterminate ones, were sampled; in area AP2 (Anapurus), there were 226 individuals and thirteen species, plus two indeterminate ones; and in area AP3 (São José de Ribamar), a total of 68 individuals among ten species were recorded. Regarding the indices comparing richness, abundance, and diversity, the averages were similar to other studies. However, area AP1 showed a higher richness value compared to the other areas. Areas AP2 and AP3, on the other hand, demonstrated a very limited number of species. This was considered due to the areas lacking planning in their planting or implementation in the replacement of new species. Such information can be useful for the planning of the sampled municipalities, contributing as a subsidy for directing urban planning actions to be carried out in public spaces.
