Abstract: Road safety is a problem within the scope of community health and public health. The national authority for road safety (ANSR), over the last few decades, together with various governmental and non-governmental bodies in the community, has developed informative and educational campaigns that aim to increase the literacy of the Portuguese population regarding this problem. Death or physical disability with a high degree of dependence has a family, economic and social impact that significantly alters the quality standards of the general population. Given the data presented by (Autoridade Nacional Segurança Rodoviária, 2023) , which it released in its report for the first semester between January and June of this calendar year, we were curious to investigate this subject and try to understand why the publication of these reports and the actions developed in the community it does not have a more evident positive impact, significantly reducing the number of road accidents per year. Therefore, we developed an exploratory study using a literature review, in the various computer sources and financial collections available, supported by epidemiological and biostatistical data at national level (Portugal), particularly the District of Santarém, for the convenience of researchers. Throughout the research, relevant discoveries emerged for the study that relate our country to the rest of the European community. Thus, we will alert and sensitize the academic community and provide care for the need to respond to health determinants relevant to the phenomenon, increasing the implementation of nursing interventions based on national and regional strategies, in order to especially raise awareness among the younger population, hoping that in the future the number of deaths and serious injuries from road accidents will decrease significantly.
