Abstract: Introduction: Cynara scolymus L. is a plant broadly known in the literature, because of the presence of flavonoids in its composition, that draws attention to the prospect of new sunscreen, since they are secondary metabolites capable of absorbing Ultraviolet radiation. Methodology: the ethanolic extract of C. scolymus L. was evaluated for its photoprotective capacity and was also evaluated in a sunscreen formulation on a non-ionic cream. After being formulated and tested for its photoprotective efficacy, it have been subjected to preliminary stability tests, to determine if the formulation was viable after being subjected to extreme temperature conditions and in accelerated stability tests in order to determine the stability of this formulation it was put on an oven for a period of 2 months. Results: The SPF of the extract was higher than that determined as the minimum value allowed by ANVISA in all tested concentrations. The formulation already presented SPF 29 in its highest evaluated concentration, with an ultra UVA/UVB ratio for UVA. As for stability, little variation was observed over the 60 days stability tests in which parameters such as pH, spreadability factor, organoleptic characteristics, SPF and UVA/UVB ratio were satisfactory. Conclusion: The evaluated parameters were satisfactory, allowing the conclusion that both the raw material and the final product have good efficacy and stability in the face of temperature variations.
