Abstract: The demographic transition and the increase in cases of chronic non-communicable diseases have led to numerous demands to improve the quality of life of individuals with life-threatening illnesses. Palliative care is therefore essential because it prioritizes approaches that provide better living conditions. The general aim of this study was to assess palliative performance, the risk of malnutrition and to identify the nutritional therapy used for patients with chronic life-threatening illnesses in a general hospital in the interior of the state of Rio de Janeiro. This is a cross-sectional study in which data was collected from medical records (personal and clinical identification), information on nutritional therapy and nutritional risk screening and application of the Palliative Performance Scale (PPS) for hospitalized patients eligible for the study. A cross-frequency analysis was carried out in order to test one of the research's initial hypotheses, which was to associate nutritional risk with patients' palliative performance. A total of 135 beds were visited and 19 patients were assessed, 63% of whom were men with a mean age of 63.3 ± 17.5 years. In the functional assessment, 36.8% received PPS 30%, followed by 21.1% with PPS 40% and 21.1% with PPS 70%. With regard to nutritional screening, 63.2% were at nutritional risk, all of them ate exclusively orally and only 15.8% used calorie-protein supplements. The data on palliative performance and nutritional screening suggest a satisfactory association in the groupings of patients with low and medium/high PPS and the absence or presence of nutritional risk. The identification of patients who would benefit from palliative care should be carried out early in general hospitals, so that the principles of care are offered during the hospitalization period. Furthermore, hospitalized patients with reduced palliative performance are at greater nutritional risk.
