Abstract: Considering the context of extreme poverty and social inequality caused by economic development, Brazil is one of the countries with a large number of homeless people. These individuals face daily challenges in ensuring their survival, such as food security and finding a place to sleep. Unemployment, in turn, is the main factor contributing to homelessness, leading to the breakdown or rupture of family and/or community ties, resulting in difficulties exercising citizenship. This study aimed to characterize the epidemiological profile of homeless people using the Shelter Center in the central region of São Paulo. This descriptive, exploratory, and quantitative study used semi-structured interviews, with sampling based on accessibility and progressive inclusion criteria. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee under number CAAE: 81393917.3.0000.5463 and opinion number: 2.505.357. The sociodemographic characteristics of the people interviewed in the shelters totaled a sample of 740 people. The majority of those sheltered in the surveyed units were male (71.62%). Regarding place of birth, 1/3 of those surveyed were born in the State of São Paulo (30.27%). Regarding the length of time spent homeless, 37.6% of those interviewed had been homeless for between 1 and 5 years. 99.46% suffered discrimination for being homeless. For the people interviewed, the Shelter represents a unit of reception, refuge, shelter, community, and a place of dignified food. It is concluded that the immediate protection of homeless people is necessary, encompassing the various perspectives that make up this situation, not considering them acceptable, but providing solutions. It is essential to create strategies for the homeless population to overcome social barriers, offering them, through shelters, integration into the Unified Health System and other social reintegration services and programs, in order to reduce the socioeconomic inequalities that are still very much present in Brazil.
