Percepções sobre o Português Paulistano: um experimento matched-guise combinando as variáveis (CN), (ẽ) e (-r)
Tomando como ponto de partida os resultados obtidos pelo estudo de produção desenvolvido por Oushiro (2015) sobre as variáveis linguísticas concordância nominal de número (CN), pronúncia de /e/ nasal em sílaba tônica em meio de palavra (ẽ) e coda /-r/ (-r) no português paulistano, assim como estudos de percepção sobre as mesmas variáveis (e.g. MENDES, 2016), esta pesquisa consistiu na seleção e manipulação de estímulos para a confecção de um experimento matched-guise que combina essas três variáveis linguísticas - duas de natureza fonética (ẽ; –r) e uma de natureza morfossintática (CN). A técnica matched-guise consiste em observar a reação do ouvinte a performances linguísticas que se diferenciam apenas em aspectos específicos e controlados. Assim, no caso deste experimento, utilizou-se o software Praat para selecionar e manipular trechos curtos da fala de diferentes sujeitos, nas quais ocorrem tokens de (CN), (ẽ) e (-r), tendo como objetivo a criação de oito disfarces (guises) para cada falante, que se diferenciem apenas no que diz respeito às três variáveis em questão. Os principais resultados desta pesquisa dizem respeito às exigências que devem ser seguidas durante a seleção e manipulação de estímulos linguísticos para um experimento de percepção linguística, a fim de garantir que os disfarces soem “naturais” (como se não houvessem sido manipulados) e que não afetem sensivelmente e de forma desigual a percepção do ouvinte devido a aspectos que não estão sendo observados (tal qual o conteúdo informacional do trecho). Conclui-se que a utilização da técnica matched-guise permite observar a interação entre mais de uma variável, mas a confecção de disfarces (guises) para um experimento de percepção deve seguir rigorosos parâmetros para que se garanta um resultado válido.

Abstract:
Taking as a starting point the results attained by the production study developed by Oushiro (2015) of the linguistic variables noun phrase number agreement (NPAgr), pronunciation of nasal /e/ in midword stressed syllables (ẽ) and coda /-r/ (-r) in Paulistano Portuguese, as well as other perception studies about the same variables (e.g. MENDES, 2016), the present study consists of the selection and manipulation of stimuli to compose a matched-guise experiment which combines those three linguistic variables – two of them of a phonetic nature (ẽ; -r) and one of a morphosyntactic nature (CN). The matched-guise technique consists of observing the listeners’ reactions to linguistic performances that are different from each other only in certain specified and controlled aspects. Therefore, this research is based on the selection and manipulation, using the Praat software, of small excerpts of different subjects’ speech, in which occur tokens of (CN), (ẽ) and (-r), with the goal of creating eight guises for each speaker, that are different from each other only in the aspects of the three selected variables. The main results attained are related to the requirements which must be followed during the selection and manipulation of linguistic stimuli to compose a perception experiment, in order to guarantee that the guises all sound “natural” (as if they hadn’t been manipulated) and that they don’t affect noticeably and unevenly the listener’s perception due to aspects that are not being observed (such as the content of the excerpt). The general conclusion is that the matched-guise technique allows to observe the interaction between more than one variable, and the production of guises for a perception experiment must follow stringent parameters in order to guarantee a valid result.
