Abstract: The number of elderly individuals is increasing worldwide. In old age, new health challenges arise due to potential issues such as loss of body mass, nutritional deficits, chewing difficulties, changes in oral integrity, and other oral pathologies. This research aims to analyze, in the literature, the perception that elderly individuals have regarding their oral health. Data were collected between October and November 2023. Combinations of the descriptors "perception," "oral health", "dental health," "nutrition," "diet," "elderly," and "adult" were used in the PUBMED, SciELO, BVS-SAÚDE, and LILACS databases. Only original articles written in Portuguese or English between 2018 and 2023 related to the topic were included. Studies involving animals, duplicates, or incomplete data were excluded. The literature indicates a relationship between dietary habits, oral health, and well-being in the elderly. Most related studies are Brazilian, with a prevalence of women. The most recurrent chronic disease was hypertension. A standardized methodology allowing the comparison of all data was not found. The data suggest that physical aspects influence self-perception of oral health. Although, it is essential to expand research to achieve better systemic health conditions.
