Abstract: Ophthalmic surgery, whether aesthetic or functional, goes beyond physical correction—it profoundly affects self-perception and identity. Procedures such as blepharoplasty, ptosis correction, strabismus repair, and refractive surgeries (like LASIK) alter not only the patient’s appearance but also their psychological and social self-image. Body image, defined as the mental and emotional representation of one’s own body, is influenced by biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Ocular appearance changes can restore self-esteem and social confidence or, conversely, generate unrealistic expectations and psychological distress. This article presents a narrative review exploring the relationship between body image, self-esteem, and quality of life after ophthalmologic surgery, emphasizing the importance of an interdisciplinary approach involving clinical medicine, ophthalmology, and mental health.
