Abstract: Computational Thinking (CT) emerges as an essential 21st-century skill, integrating cognitive processes such as decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition, and algorithm design. More than teaching programming, CT represents a way of thinking applicable to solving complex problems across multiple domains. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the theoretical foundations, the relevance of CT in education and the labor market, as well as examples of practical applications in national and international contexts. In addition, pedagogical methods, empirical results, and the main challenges of large-scale implementation are discussed. Findings indicate that CT holds transformative potential while relying on public policies, teacher training, and digital inclusion to be consolidated as a structural axis of contemporary literacy. This work ends with a conclusion and addresses future work.
