Abstract: The creation of Conservation Units (UCs) can lead to the loss of symbolic territories and the sense of belonging for some communities, potentially resulting in a process of disidentification. This emotional disruption may reduce engagement in environmental preservation. It is believed that many managers and community members have not yet fully understood the importance of preserving cultural identities, especially considering that these areas are spaces where cultural expressions interact with the natural environment, reinforcing local identity. This book chapter serves as a prelude to a series of articles aiming to present and analyze the historical and cultural heritage of UCs. Additionally, it seeks to provide information on Historical and Cultural Heritage and how it is addressed within Conservation Units. There are clear deficiencies in the management of cultural assets, particularly the lack of specific measures for their protection and preservation by responsible agencies. Preservation is a key aspect for many UCs, fostering the integration between culture and nature, as communities have left cultural imprints in many of these protected areas. Valuing social participation can lead to positive changes through dialogue and closer collaboration among stakeholders, promoting the development of shared strategies that help keep cultural identity alive while addressing conservation challenges and promoting balance among history, society, and management within UCs.
