Abstract: Objective: To compare the use of oxycodone in cancer patients under palliative care with other opioids. Method: This is an integrative review based on randomized clinical trials (RCTs). PubMed, VHL and Scielo were used as databases until November 2023. The researchers found eligible articles, submitted them to quality and risk of bias analysis, and extracted the findings. Results: In 1 RCT, the PM serum concentration of oxycodone in cancer patients was lower than in patients with fatal oxycodone intoxication. 4 studies compared the pharmacological profile between oxycodone and morphine. In one of them, oxycodone was not superior to morphine in patients with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) rs4680-GG in catechol-O- methyltransferase (COMT); the other articles did not find a statistically significant incidence of adverse effects in the two drugs analyzed. 1 study compared the advantages of synergizing oxycodone with paracetamol in breakthrough cancer pain, which proved to be effective and safe on its own or in combination with other opioids. 2 studies investigated the efficacy and safety of oxycodone with fentanyl and buprenorphine, in both of which oxycodone achieved better results in terms of dose and treatment discontinuation than the other 2 drugs. Conclusion: Oxycodone is an effective analgesic for palliative care patients dealing with cancer pain, however, further studies should be carried out.
