Abstract: This study addresses the problem of high machine downtime at the film tensioning station, the root causes of which were unknown. Therefore, the search for improving equipment performance, specifically aiming to significantly reduce downtime was the central aim of the research, through the main causes of stoppages at the station, as well as the implementation of improvements and assessments of the impact of these interventions in operational efficiency and productivity. In view of this, the methodology adopted was the DMAIC cycle (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control), incorporating quality tools such as: the "5 Whys", 5W2H, Ishikawa diagram, action plan derived from this diagram and graph of Pareto. As a result, the latter's analysis highlighted the film's engagement with the roller as the main cause of stoppages. Furthermore, the optimized investigation revealed that improper film tension adjustment affected crucial components, including bushings, springs and the scissor knife. Furthermore, cam wear, resulting from insufficient inspection and maintenance, also hampered the actuation of the scissor knife and unsatisfactory lubrication emerged as another contributing factor to downtime. Thus, from the execution of the action plan, satisfactory results were obtained, such as; the reduction of machine inactivity from 30.85 to 1.73 hours.
