Abstract: Osteoporosis is a systemic bone disease that reduces bone mass and increases fracture risk. Although it is often silent until the first fracture, osteoporosis can result in increased mortality rates and significant impact on an individual’s quality of life. The present study aimed to evaluate the frequency of osteoporosis across different age groups, genders and ethnicities in the southeast region of Brazil. Approximately 10 million Brazilians are affected, with the highest prevalence occurring between ages 50 and 59. Prevalence decreases after 70 probably due to underreporting. Women have higher prevalence due to menopause, and white individuals are at greater risk, possibly due to genetic factors. Even though afro- descendants have less chances of developing osteoporosis due to genetic factors, the disease is frequently underreported in this group due to unequal healthcare access. The analysis reveal an urgent need for public policies focused on early diagnosis, prevention, and enhancement of database feeding.
