Abstract: Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become fragile and prone to fractures due to the loss of bone density. This disease affects millions of people worldwide and is particularly prevalent in postmenopausal women and the elderly. Bones are living tissues that are constantly remodeling, but in osteoporosis, an imbalance occurs between cells, resulting in weaker bones. Misinformation about osteoporosis is a significant problem, as many people do not recognize the severity of the disease and therefore do not engage in proper prevention. It is common to think that osteoporosis only affects elderly women, but men and younger people can also be affected. Often, the lack of visible symptoms at the onset of the disease contributes to underestimating the risk. Diagnosis is made through bone densitometry, which measures the mineral density of bones. However, many people do not undergo preventive exams, making early detection difficult. In many cases, managing osteoporosis involves a combination of non-drug strategies, such as dietary changes to include more calcium and vitamin D-rich foods, regular exercise that promotes strength and balance, and the adoption of measures to prevent falls, especially in the elderly. Osteoporosis prevention should start early, with a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, bone-strengthening exercises, and avoiding risk factors such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Serious consequences, such as fractures, chronic pain, and loss of mobility, can be avoided by adopting these preventive measures. Awareness of the disease is crucial for early detection and effective management, ensuring a better quality of life for affected individuals. Therefore, it is important to be aware of risk factors and preventive measures to address osteoporosis. Greater dissemination of correct information and the promotion of preventive exams are essential to combat misinformation and promote bone health.
