Abstract: This work arises from our post-doctoral research at the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon (IPL) and aims to analyze Portuguese medieval portals as communication means, taking into account a communication, artistic and cultural perspective. We mobilize, from an interdisciplinary perspective, studies by authors in the areas of Communication, Arts, Religion, History, among others. The methodology used was an analysis based on the researched bibliography and visits to sites where medieval portals (with a focus on the Manueline style) are present. We focus, in this writing, on the South Portal of the Convento de Cristo, in Tomar, as a privileged example of a portal as a means of communication. The results of this work show that medieval Manueline portals (carved in stone) are, effectively, communicational means that deal directly with temporal bias (Innis, 2011) and reveal cultural characteristics specific to medieval Portugal, when symbols and meanings were strongly used by the Catholic Church and the Monarchy to offer faith and patriotic messages.
