Abstract: Illuminated manuscripts are books with images, that are called illuminations, among its pages. They were made popular during the medieval times in such a way that, today, they are known as the main sources of medieval images to have survived the passing of time. In this chapter, we seek to present the reader with the materiality of such objects, focusing especially on what allowed their existence and usage during the Middle Ages. To do so, we stayed within the barriers of the early years of Medieval Europe, known as the Early Middle Ages, from the 5th to the 10th centuries. It was during this period that this type of manuscript got to be valued as a means for devotion that went beyond the primary book function of knowledge storage. This development is inseparable from the places where they were made and for where they were meant to be used: the monasteries. They were Europe's cultural centres during the Early Middle Ages and, as such, had most of the existing illuminated manuscripts within their walls. All processes of the confection of a manuscript happened inside them, by the monks that lived there. We claim, therefore, that the definition of what is an illuminated manuscript is inseparable from the places where they were made and for where they would be read.
