Abstract: Émile Durkheim, in The Elementary Forms of The Religious Life, cites the Four Noble Truths as the pillar of Buddhist philosophy and religion – a theoretical reference that permeates the development of all the main traditions of Buddhist thought. In this article, our objective is to present general and introductory lines about this concept, having Durkheim’s text as the narrative line – also bringing discussions about the contexts where Durkheim wrote and contrasting other theoretical approaches.
