Abstract: The genera Proteus, Morganella, and Providencia consist of Gram-negative bacilli with peritrichous flagella, often grouped in the tribe Proteae. Although many species within this tribe are commensals, several have clinical relevance in both human and veterinary medicine. The genus Proteus is the most studied, especially due to its predominant association with urinary tract infections (UTIs) in humans, notably the species P. mirabilis, P. vulgaris, and P. penneri. Providencia and Morganella are also causative agents of these infections. However, several species have a little-explored or unknown role as pathogens, as new species have been discovered recently. In this context, this review addresses all species described to date from the three genera and explores recent findings on infections in humans and animals.
