OS ESPETÁCULOS LÍRICOS E A CONSTRUÇÃO DO GOSTO MUSICAL DAS ELITES DE SÃO LUÍS DA SEGUNDA METADE DO SÉCULO XIX.
Um dos requisitos para que uma
cidade ostentasse o título de civilizada e
moderna no século XIX era possuir um teatro.
São Luís, capital da província do Maranhão,
ganha o seu teatro em 1817. A partir de então,
a maioria dos eventos culturais e cívicos
realizados na província aconteciam no palco
do Teatro São Luís. Nesse teatro as elites
compareciam para verem e serem vistos
pelos seus pares e pelos diferentes e também
para aperfeiçoar seu gosto musical. Mas o
gosto não era adquirido e depurado somente
nas noites de espetáculo lírico, pois como
os jornais eram o principal veículo utilizado
para a leitura e difusão dos romances e do
conhecimento científico produzido contribuíam
para o refinamento das elites. Este estudo tem
como objetivo analisar a importância que os
espetáculos líricos realizados no teatro São Luís
exerceram na consolidação e aprimoramento
do refinamento da sociedade ludovicense, em
especial de seus estratos mais elevados, visto
que, naquele século XIX as elites queriam
ser iguais à Paris. Para realizar o referido
estudo analisamos as notícias veiculadas em
mais de vinte jornais de diferentes tendências
jornalísticas, e que apresentavam em suas
páginas notícias relacionadas ao movimento
cultural de São Luís. Assim, percebemos que
as idas ao Teatro São Luís para assistir aos
espetáculos líricos à moda europeia serviam
para diferenciar os homens e as mulheres que
ao teatro compareciam, e a apresentação de
um repertório essencialmente lírico fizera com
que as elites ao menos parecessem cultas,
modernas, refinadas e letradas.

Abstract:
One of the requirements for a city boasts the title of civilized and modern
in the nineteenth century was to have a theater. São Luís, the capital of Maranhão
province, earns its large theater in 1817. Since then, the majority of cultural and civic
events held in the province took place on the stage at the Theater São Luís. In this
theater the elites make an appearance with the purpose to see and be seen by their
peers and the different ones and also to refine his musical taste. But the taste was
not acquired and cleared only on the nights of lyrical show, because as newspapers
were the main vehicle used for reading and dissemination of novels and scientific
knowledge produced, they contributed to the refinement of the elite. This study aims to
analyze the lyrical performances performed at the São Luís Theater exercised in the
consolidation and improvement of refining ludovicense society, especially its higher
strata, as the nineteenth century elites wanted to be equal to Paris. To perform this
study, we analyzed the news published over twenty newspapers of different journalistic
trends, and had in their pages, related news about the cultural movement of São Luís.
So, we realized that the frequency to São Luís Theater to watch the lyrics show based
on the European fashion, served to differentiate the men and women who attended the
theater, and the presentation of an essentially lyrical repertoire had made the elites at
least seem educated, modern, refined and literate ones.
