Abstract: Palliative care is a form of treatment aimed at patients with serious and/or advanced illnesses, with the aim of improving the quality of life of the patient and their family, seeking to alleviate as much as possible all the pain caused by the moment of facing the disease and facing the end, so it involves, in addition to drug therapy, the monitoring of a multidisciplinary team. This study was carried out by means of a literature review which sought out the main concepts, as well as a description of the common symptoms in patients in an advanced stage and the importance of pain control, the assessment of the patient's emotional, social and spiritual needs. With the aim of highlighting the importance of an individualized palliative care plan and how to involve the family and caregivers in this process. This is a literature review, based on official health websites as well as scientific journals such as the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel - CAPES, the Virtual Health Library - BVS and SciELO - Scientific Electronic Library Online. This highlights the need to address and raise awareness of this treatment, with a view to improving access to these patients in public health.
