OS AVANÇOS NAS DISCUSSÕES SOBRE VELHICE E ENVELHECIMENTO E SUA INFLUÊNCIA NOS CONCEITOS ATUAIS
O presente artigo tem por objetivo apresentar o contexto histórico e a evolução das reflexões que permeiam os conceitos atuais de velhice e envelhecimento, uma vez que a longevidade é uma realidade presente em todo o mundo. Com o número de idosos crescente a cada dia, se faz necessário compreender como a sociedade atual construiu tais conceitos e, a partir deles, refletir sobre questões importantes para atender as necessidades dessa população, como políticas públicas, educação, saúde, lazer e previdência social, por exemplo. Por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o tema, foi possível verificar que a velhice e o envelhecimento foram vislumbrados de maneiras diferentes, de acordo com a cultura e o momento histórico: o idoso foi percebido como detentor de conhecimentos e merecedor de respeito até como um indivíduo digno apenas de piedade. Hoje, na cultura ocidental, envelhecer possui méritos mas também preocupação diante de questões sociais que acabam muitas vezes levando o idoso a ser entendido como um problema na sociedade. Desta maneira, entender tais processos é fundamental para transformar pré-conceitos em atitudes viáveis para reorganizar a sociedade atendendo as necessidades reais dos idosos.

Abstract:
This article aims to present the historical context and the evolution of the reflections that permeate the current concepts of old age and aging, since longevity is a present reality all over the world. With the growing number of older people every day, it is necessary to understand how current society has built such concepts and, from them, reflect on important issues to meet the needs of this population, such as public policies, education, health, leisure and social security, for example. Through a literature review on the subject, it was possible to verify that old age and aging were glimpsed in different ways, according to the culture and the historical moment: the elderly were perceived as having knowledge and deserving respect even as a person. an individual worthy of pity only. Today, in Western culture, aging has merits but also concern with social issues that often lead the elderly to be understood as a problem in society. Thus, understanding such processes is fundamental to transform preconceptions into viable attitudes to reorganize society, meeting the real needs of the elderly.
