Abstract: The Brazilian semi-arid region is characterized by the presence of typical rainy and dry seasons, which influence the availability of pasture for animals, limiting the sustainability of animal production. The adoption of techniques that assist in the regularization of forage support, such as Forage Budgeting, can play an important role. The objective of the present work was to use Forage Budgeting methodology to estimate the annual availability of forage and to guide the feeding planning of a sheep herd on a family farm in the city of Paulistana-PI. The methodology included the stages of surveying the available forage resources and herd in categories and then estimating the forage support capacity and the need for forage consumption throughout the year to carry out the monthly balance of forage, identifying the months of forage deficit or surplus and outline breeding planning strategies. Areas of native pasture (Caatinga) were identified, used predominantly in the rainy season (December to April) and sorghum cultivation for silage and forage palm, the latter for use in the dry season (June to October) and the transition months rainy-dry (May) and dry-rainy (November). A deficit of forage was observed in the rainy season due to the small area destined for native grazing, suggesting the expansion of the area of this pasture, the area destined to the cultivation of sorghum for silage and/or an increase in the area of cactus forage. Forage production and consumption estimates throughout the year were consistent with the management difficulties reported by the producer. Forage production and consumption estimates throughout the year were consistent with the management difficulties reported by the producer. Forage Budgeting made it possible to define an overview of the forage supply capacity and the needs of the animals compatible with the reality of the property and to allow the elaboration of management strategies consistent with the profile of the property.
