Abstract: The main objective of this article is to review the agroecological production of vegetables, a practice that integrates ecological and social principles into agriculture, promoting fair and ecologically sound food systems. The main principles of agroecology include the appreciation of biodiversity, co-creation of knowledge, and responsible governance, which are fundamental for food security. In olericulture, agroecology stands out for its use of sustainable techniques, such as crop rotation and composting, which enhance soil quality and reduce dependence on external inputs. Research shows that vegetables grown agroecologically have lower contamination by pathogens and greater resistance to pests. Furthermore, agroecological management employs natural methods for pest and disease control, such as companion plants and plant protectant solutions, which do not harm human or environmental health. In Brazil, the agroecological production of vegetables is on the rise, driven by public policies that encourage sustainable practices and value family farming. This approach not only improves food quality but also strengthens local marketing networks, promoting the resilience of rural communities. In summary, agroecology in horticulture is a viable alternative to address contemporary agricultural challenges, providing social, economic, and environmental benefits. Encouraging this practice is essential to ensure a sustainable and just future, valuing biodiversity and promoting the health of soil and communities.
