Abstract: This article aims to present the experience with Portuguese language teaching practices within the scope of the leveling project, linked to the Institutional Support Program for Incoming Students (PADI - 2022), carried out at the Institute of Xingu Studies, UNIFESSPA. The action aims to meet specific demands of students entering higher education in Literature, Biological Sciences and Forestry Engineering courses. In this sense, considering the importance of knowledge of the Portuguese language, its structure and functioning for the performance of academic writing, six workshops were offered that addressed fundamental aspects of grammatical structures. The objective of this project was, therefore, to provide complementary training to incoming students, aiming to improve their basic knowledge of the Portuguese language. Through practical and interactive activities, the aim was to instigate reflection and promote active participation on the part of students. From this perspective, Portuguese language workshops were configured as an effective alternative to enrich the linguistic training of new academics, while a reduction in dropouts in higher education was also envisaged. Despite the obstacles faced, such as the time needed for planning and the availability of adequate materials, the strategies adopted in the workshops proved to be effective in their purpose and were successful in achieving the outlined objectives. This experience reiterates the relevance of Portuguese language workshops as a complementary tool in the academic training of students and highlights the importance of continuous investment in this type of initiative.
