Abstract: Bipolar disorder (TB) is a severe, chronic psychiatric condition that affects approximately 4% of the world's adult population. TB can manifest at any age, but occurs most often in adolescents and young adults (Marcus Deminico, 2018). Treatment is performed with the association of pharmacotherapy and psychology and / or psychiatry. Effective drug treatment of TB consists of mood-regulating drugs such as lithium carbonate (Zung S. et al, 2010). Psychotherapeutic treatment is necessary to contribute to increase patient compliance with treatment, as drug therapy has adverse effects that lead patients to discontinue it. Treatment discontinuation is severe and can lead to recurrent episodes of the disease (Inocenti, Miasso et al, 2007). Along with the prescription of lithium, it is important to perform clinical laboratory follow-up due to the development of pathophysiological and biochemical alterations arising from the medication. An important change is the emergence of hypothyroidism in patients with prolonged use (over 6 to 18 months) of the drug, which affects around 30% of patients, being more common in women (Zung S, et al, 2010). Thus, the purpose of this report is to understand the pathology in its clinical and laboratory and pharmacotherapeutic aspects.
