Abstract: Bipolar disorder is considered a chronic mental disorder, mainly characterized by extreme changes in mood, with marked episodes of mania or hypomania and depression. The use of lithium to treat this disorder is effective in stabilizing mood and preventing recurrences. These are episodes that can last weeks, days or months. With no effective causes, they can be associated with various genetic, chemical or environmental factors that can significantly affect the patient's life and well-being. Lithium is the gold standard for the treatment of bipolar disorder, being a mood stabilizer used in the acute, maintenance and continuation phases. It acts on manic and depressive crises, being the only drug with proven efficacy against suicidal crises. As it is positioned between therapy and toxicity, monitoring and dose adjustment are necessary for each patient. In this scenario, the present study aims to carry out a literature review on the use of lithium in bipolar disorder, taking into account its effectiveness as a mood stabilizer. The patient affected by this disorder must have a care network, made up of psychiatrists, psychologists and pharmacists. The pharmacist, in this sense, must prioritize the safety of treatment, adopting measures to clarify the patient and their family members regarding: the drug, the action of the medicine, the correct form of administration, possible adverse effects, and drug interactions caused by the use of lithium.
