Abstract: Anxiety and depression are widespread emotional disorders that affect millions of people around the world and significantly impair their quality of life. The search for alternative treatments is increasing, especially those based on natural products such as Passiflora incarnata. This plant, also known as purple passion fruit, has been studied for its therapeutic properties, including its anxiolytic and antidepressant effects. Aim: The aim of this study is to review the current literature on the use of Passiflora incarnata in the treatment of anxiety and depression and to analyze its therapeutic effects, safety and possible interactions with other drugs. Methodology: The research was conducted by reviewing scientific articles available in the PubMed, SciELO and Google Scholar databases. The focus was on clinical trials and systematic reviews examining the effects of this plant on anxiety and depression disorders. Results: The results show that Passiflora incarnata possesses anxiolytic and antidepressant properties that promote the reduction of anxiety and depression symptoms, especially in controlled doses. The plant's bioactive compounds, such as alkaloids, flavonoids and glycosides, act on the central nervous system and modulate neurotransmitters such as GABA and serotonin. Despite the positive effects, efficacy may vary from patient to patient and further studies are needed to confirm long-term results. In addition, the reported side effects are generally mild, such as drowsiness and gastrointestinal discomfort. Conclusion: Passiflora incarnata is a promising therapeutic option for the treatment of anxiety and depression, with good safety and efficacy at appropriate doses. However, it is important that its use is supervised by a healthcare professional, especially to avoid interactions with other medications. Pharmacists play an important role in monitoring and guiding patients to ensure the correct and safe use of the plant. Further clinical studies are needed to deepen knowledge of the long-term effects of this plant in the treatment of these conditions.
