Abstract: Oral cancer is a disease that has become an obstacle over the years due to its significant morbidity and mortality rates. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most frequent type of oral cancer, accounting for more than 90% of cases. Despite continuous improvements in cancer therapy, early diagnosis is crucial for successful treatment. In this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been increasingly applied in the field of stomatology. This study aimed to address the role of AI as an innovative tool and auxiliary resource in the early diagnosis of oral cancer through a literature review. This literature review was conducted using the PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL), and SciELO databases, including articles published between 2020 and 2025. Among the most cited AI technologies, deep learning and machine learning stand out, mainly applied to the analysis of clinical and histopathological images. AI has shown high efficiency in detecting malignant oral lesions, with algorithms reaching up to 94.9% sensitivity and 88.7% specificity. Despite the promising results, studies highlighted challenges such as the need for large databases, variation in image quality, and lack of large-scale clinical validation.
