• Abstract: Professional duties and skills are topics discussed by the category of social workers, and acquire another status when understood as part of the instrumentality of Social Service. Therefore, in this article we present a synthesis of the discussions undertaken in the Final Work of the Course in Social Service at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), in which we seek to understand the work of social workers in the hospital environment, taking as a reality the Monsenhor Walfredo Gurgel Hospital in Natal/RN. We started from a qualitative approach and made use of the historical-dialectic materialist method. Thus, we point out the need to expand this discussion in the context of health and the possible mediations between professional work and the Ethical-Political Project, in the conformation of attributions, competencies and professional instrumentality in this socio-occupational space.
