Abstract: Science, innovation and technology are increasingly intertwined and are undoubtedly fundamental pillars for a country's economic progress and development and for the sustainability of companies as economic and social units that generate wealth, ensure that the population's needs for goods and services are met and contribute to improving society's well-being. However, we believe that the sustainability of our business fabric and the resulting effects depend to a large extent on the ability to adapt to the new challenges of the economy, digital and corporate governance. The aim of this study was therefore to find out about corporate governance systems in Portugal and their adherence to the digital transition process in the face of the challenges of sustainability as a step towards modernization, economic growth and social development. For this purpose, the research focused on the literature and documentation available in this field of research and on the applicable legal framework and the results of a questionnaire we sent to the president of the Portuguese Institute of Corporate Governance (IPCG). Among the main results of the research was that: - the majority of companies in Portugal are micro and small companies, with their own specificities that make it difficult to modernize them; - the monist system is the most widely used in corporate governance in Portugal, extending to listed companies; - medium and large companies are taking significant steps towards digital transformation; - there is a cause-effect relationship between the use of digital technology and an increase in company results; - the average degree of compliance with the governance recommendations generated has been increasing year on year, which is a sign of business growth and progress in terms of sustainability challenges.
