Abstract: The critical fortune of the novelistic genre highlights the artist's attempt to innovate around the process of creating narratives. The novelist, using different themes exploring innovative composition techniques, such as indirect speech, the stream of consciousness and the interior monologue, etc., managed to create narratives with a high degree of innovation, transmitting a more incredible sensation of verisimilitude to the reader. On the other hand, the contemporary reader needs a high degree of attention and multiple horizons and reading experiences to understand better and fill in the gaps left by the author throughout the texts. But to what extent are contemporary audiences read and appreciate these fragmentary novels? This text reflects on the receptivity of the work Ulysses by James Joyce in the light of contemporaneity. Thus, for the theoretical basis of this work, we used the theories of Rosenfeld (1969), Rosenthal (1975), Humphrey (1976), Proença Filho (1998), Oliveira (2000), Eagleton (2006) e, Pinto (2008), among others. This text will contribute to the understanding of fragmented novelistic. With this research, we concluded that the contemporary novel, although being a fragmentary narrative, can be appreciated by the young reader as long as he is motivated to understand the particularities of the stream of consciousness, the interior monologue, and other stylistic resources. used by contemporary authors.
