Abstract: The emergency contraceptive, also known as the "morning-after pill," is a medication marketed in Brazil. It is designed for the prevention of unwanted pregnancy and is used after unprotected intercourse, i.e., without the use of another regular contraceptive method such as daily oral or injectable hormonal contraceptives or condoms. The action of this medication consists in inhibiting ovulation, preventing the sperm from fertilizing the egg, and thus it is not considered an abortifacient. The recommendation from pharmacists and gynecologists is that this medication should only be used in emergency situations. Women who have an active sex life are not advised to use this medication indiscriminately, as excessive hormone levels in the body can pose health risks.
