Abstract: This study aims to reflect on how medicalization becomes inscribed in the subject’s life in contemporary times, investigating the ways in which psychic suffering is experienced and its relationship with Desire within this context. Desire is understood as that which moves us, constitutes us as subjects, and differentiates us, while simultaneously placing us in constant conflict with reality, with others, and with ourselves. In contemporary society, however, we witness a phenomenon that seems to seek to silence this conflicting and desiring dimension of the subject through the medicalization of psychic suffering. Under the guise of scientific discourse and the promise of well-being and health, medicalization transforms anguish, sadness, and existential unrest into disorders deemed treatable by pharmacological means. The subject, once called upon to confront their lack and engage with their desire, is now invited to see themselves as a "patient," whose suffering can be quickly suppressed through the intake of a pill. Given this, the present research was conducted through a qualitative and bibliographic approach, involving the collection and analysis of scientific articles and literary works in Psychology and Psychoanalysis. The integration of the main findings allowed for a deeper understanding of the effects of medicalization on the subjective experience of psychic suffering and in the field of desire.
