Abstract: The use of photographic recognition as evidence in criminal proceedings in Brazil has been the target of criticism, especially when carried out outside the parameters recommended by article 226 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Historically treated as a mere recommendation, this procedure has been questioned by society and the media due to recurring cases of recognition errors. In response, the Public Defender's Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro, through the Criminal Defense Coordination (COCRIM), began, as of 2019, a series of reports on the failures associated with this practice, consolidating data on wrongful arrests and wrongful convictions.
