Abstract: The red pepper tree, Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, is a tree native to South America, known for its red fruits and use in traditional medicine. The study aims to investigate local knowledge about the use of mastic in the rural community of the Ademar Moreira Settlement in São Pedro Da Aldeia, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. A literature review to understand the main use of mastic from recent research was made. The field research was carried out in January 2023 and involved the application of an ethnobotanical questionnaire with 30 respondents, aged between 16 and 74 years. The results showed that the use of mastic as food was the main result found, followed by commercial and medicinal use. This study contributes to the understanding of the role of plants as a valuable source of food, medicine and materials for local communities and the importance of preserving plant biodiversity for the sustainability and resilience of local ecosystems.
