Abstract: The National School Food Program (PNAE) is responsible for providing school meals to a significant portion of students enrolled in the three stages of public basic education in Brazil. With the enactment of Law no. 11.947 in 2019, a minimum of 30% of the financial resources allocated by the National Fund for the Development of Education (FNDE) to the PNAE must be compulsorily directed to the direct purchase of food from family farming. Since its foundation, family farming has held great importance in Muniz Freire. According to the 2010 demographic census (IBGE, 2010), the municipality has a population of 17.176 people, with 52.87% residing in the rural area. The 2017 Agricultural Census (IBGE, 2017) reveals that 77% of the municipality's agriculture is family-based, predominantly consisting of small properties. Additionally, 27.58% of the municipality's GDP is derived from this sector. The aim of this study is to analyze the influences of the National School Food Program on family farming in Muniz Freire and its impact on food consumption in the municipality.
