Abstract: This paper analyzes the perceptions of students at the Manuel Inácio Peixoto State School, located in Cataguases, Minas Gerais, regarding the modernist symbols present in their school and urban spaces. The city is nationally recognized for its significant modernist production in architecture, visual arts, furniture, and landscaping, and includes works by renowned figures such as Oscar Niemeyer, Burle Marx, and Cândido Portinari, among others. Through questionnaires administered to students, a gap was identified between the interviewees and the modernist symbols, revealing a disconnect between the meanings of the landscape and its appropriation by social classes. The study is based on the concept of cultural landscape, according to Ribeiro (2007), suggesting that the management of the city's cultural heritage should be more inclusive, seeking to democratize access and recognition of the importance of this legacy.
