O PARADIGMA DA RELAÇÃO ENTRE ORTODONTIA E DISFUNÇÃO TEMPOROMADIBULAR: UMA REVISÃO DE LITERATURA
As disfunções temporomandibulares
assumem um papel cada vez mais importante
na prática diária do cirurgião-dentista pois
são uma desordem musculoesquelética
com elevado impacto na vida das pessoas.
Caracterizadas por uma etiologia multifatorial,
desde a década de 80 os estudos científicos
procuraram determinar quais os fatores
causais das disfunções. Nos últimos anos, a
inter-relação entre Ortodontia e disfunções
temporomandibulares (DTM) tem despertado
interesse crescente na classe odontológica,
sendo tema de discussões e controvérsias. Em
um passado recente, a oclusão era considerada
como principal fator etiológico das DTM, sendo o
tratamento ortodôntico uma medida terapêutica
primária para um restabelecimento fisiológico
do sistema estomatognático. Assim, o papel da
Ortodontia na prevenção, desencadeamento e
tratamento das DTM passou a ser investigado.
Com a realização de estudos científicos com
metodologias mais rigorosas e precisas, a
relação entre o tratamento ortodôntico e as
DTM pôde ser avaliada e questionada dentro de
um contexto baseado em evidências científicas.
Este trabalho, através de uma revisão
sistemática da literatura, teve como objetivo
analisar a inter-relação entre a Ortodontia e as
DTM.

Abstract:
Temporomandibular disorders
play an increasingly important role in the daily
practice of the dental surgeon because they are
a musculoskeletal disorder that has an impact on
people’s lives. Characterized by a multifactorial
etiology, since the 1980s scientific studies
have sought to determine the causal factors for
dysfunctions. In recent years, an interrelation
between Orthodontics and temporomandibular
dysfunction (TMD) has aroused growing interest
in the dental community, being the subject of
discussions and controversies. The last year
of a series of studies was the main etiological
factor of TMD, with orthodontic treatment being
a higher priority measure for the physiological
reestablishment of the stomatognathic system.
Thus, the role of Orthodontics in the prevention, triggering and treatment of TMD has
been investigated. With a scientific study carried out with more rigorous and precise
methodologies, a relation between the orthodontic process and the TMD. This work,
through a systematic review of the literature, aimed to analyze the inter-relationship
between Orthodontics and TMD.
