O Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), criado pela Constituição Federal de 1988, representa um importante marco na garantia do direito à saúde no Brasil. Nesse contexto, o biomédico exerce papel fundamental no diagnóstico laboratorial, na vigilância epidemiológica e na promoção da saúde, contribuindo para o fortalecimento das ações assistenciais e preventivas. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo discutir a atuação do biomédico no SUS, com ênfase no estado do Maranhão, destacando suas contribuições e os desafios enfrentados na rede pública de saúde. Trata-se de uma pesquisa bibliográfica, baseada em artigos científicos, documentos oficiais e legislações relacionadas à saúde pública e à Biomedicina. Observa-se que a atuação biomédica é essencial para o monitoramento de doenças, apoio às decisões clínicas e fortalecimento da vigilância em saúde, especialmente diante das demandas epidemiológicas e sociais do Maranhão. Entretanto, ainda existem desafios relacionados ao reconhecimento profissional e à ampliação de sua inserção no SUS. Conclui-se que o biomédico possui importância estratégica no sistema público de saúde, sendo necessária maior valorização de sua atuação nas equipes multiprofissionais.

  • Abstract: The Unified Health System (SUS), established by the 1988 Federal Constitution, represents an important milestone in guaranteeing the right to health in Brazil. In this context, biomedical professionals play a fundamental role in laboratory diagnosis, epidemiological surveillance, and health promotion, contributing to the strengtheningof healthcare and preventive actions. This study aims to discuss the role of biomedical professionals within the SUS, with emphasis on the state of Maranhão, highlighting their contributions and challenges within the public healthcare system. This is a bibliographic study based on scientific articles, official documents, and legislation related to public health and Biomedical Sciences. The findings indicate that biomedical practice is essential for disease monitoring, support for clinical decisions, and strengthening health surveillance, especially considering the epidemiological and social demands of Maranhão. However, challenges related to professional recognition and the expansion of biomedical participation within the SUS still remain. It is concluded that biomedical professionals have strategic importance in the public health system, requiring greater appreciation of their role within multidisciplinary teams.
